Google's Self Driving Car's Design

Image
When I first saw this car I was like uh... really? You would imagine that the Largest company in the world could hire some car designers and would try to get this car looking attractive and exciting. That was my initial reaction. Then I watched their first advertisement of it (provided below) - and again I was like? What are they doing? This is being presented like a children's toy and not some revolutionary futuristic magic technology.

I thought about it further and asked myself- why? Obviously a lot of thought went into this design, the commercial, and the eventual marketing campaign. Every little detail about this car's design was considered - which made me consider the question - why would they chose this boring design language? It's literally the most benign and un-threatening design imaginable!

THAT is exactly what they were going for! A design like this introduces 'self driving' vehicles to the public in a very 'boring and easy' way - exactly what y…

Digital Restoration of Lady with an Ermine

Image
This shows the current progress of my digital restoration of Lady with an Ermine. You'll notice from a-far that the differences are barely noticeable. If you click on them and zoom up close it's a lot more obvious. This is only a couple hours of work and it's a LOT easier than the Mona Lisa. The resolution isn't nearly as high, it's not as damaged, and the background is blacked out.

This was just a test to get an idea about how the smoothing of the colors would look. In the first step only the cracks are removed so the painting stays as true to the original as possible. In the next stage - i'll actually try and re-paint over the damage to try and get it back to what it looked like when it was new. This example was just to see how it might look and not trying to be accurate.

Lucan Leonardo Self Portrait ?

Image
This is called the :Lucan Self Portrait.  A supposed Self-Portrait of Leonardo da Vinci.
"Believed by some experts to be a self-portrait and therefor the work upon which a number of later paintings (such as that in the Uffizi) are based." - Link
Discovered in 2012 Said to be painted in 1505 -Museum of the Ancient People of Lucania, Italy

It is obviously severely damaged so I thought I would digitally restore it real quick. It only took about an hour because the resolution is so low. I do not think it is by Leonardo. Not just because I don't like how he looks here but it doesn't seem like his style at all.  It could be based off of one by him that was lost since there are others in this pose.

While searching for more info about this painting I found this but not sure what it is but looks like the same face.

Here are some very high resolution details of the painting but there isn't one of the entire painting.

Don't do it

Charles Bukowski
if it doesn’t come bursting out of you
in spite of everything, don’t do it.

unless it comes unasked out of your heart and your mind and your mouth and your gut, don’t do it.

if you have to sit for hours staring at your computer screen or hunched over your typewriter searching for words, don’t do it.

if you’re doing it for money or fame, don’t do it.

if you’re doing it because you want women in your bed, don’t do it. if you have to sit there and rewrite it again and again, don’t do it.

if it’s hard work just thinking about doing it, don’t do it.

if you’re trying to write like somebody else, forget about it.

if you have to wait for it to roar out of you, then wait patiently. if it never does roar out of you, do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife or your girlfriend or your boyfriend or your parents or to anybody at all, you’re not ready.

The Digital Restoration of Mona Lisa

Image
I've been working on restoring the Mona Lisa for the last few months, well over 100+ hours just on the cracks alone. I would estimate that i'm about half way through. The file i'm working with is 7,800 x 11,000 pixels and over 700mb. That's about 200 MP3 songs and 10 ipad screens worth of information. What's interesting about that is even at that resolution it's still not as detailed as Leonardo painted in or as high as I would like.

Which means that the Mona Lisa, if she were a digital screen, would be a higher resolution than most of the cutting edge technology of 2014. Many aren't aware that this paintings popularity isn't just for her appearance and mysterious aspects but because of the actual painting technique and skill involved.

I actually realllly enjoy doing this! It's very cathartic and I imagine that every crack and imperfection are like bad memories and things that are wrong with me that I'm fixing and especially other people that I…

Baby Budgie Day 14

Image
As Danny gets older I let her explore more of my room. She can't fly yet so I have to watch her but she is just like a little kid. There is really only one thing I have told her "NO" or not to do and that is to fall behind my desk/ tv. The other day she did it twice in a row and then kept going back to the spot that she fell from. I was like "noooooo" and she literally slowly backed up to the edge. I can't tell if she actually likes being stuck in the dark but it's annoying because when I try to help her out she gets scared and starts to cry.

So I put up a piece of paper and moved her jungle gym so she couldn't get to the spot where she kept falling. Today she jumped on top of that paper.. what the heck? It must really be a thing not just for humanity but for animals - especially baby animals - where they want to do exactly what you tell them not to. It's not like i'm saying "No don't eat too much candy, Danny." I'm just t…

Baby Budgie Day: 12

Image
Danny taking a nap in my lap! It's funny because you wouldn't think of a bird acting like this. It's a nesting instinct from when they were babies in a nesting box. When they are under their mom and with their siblings they act more like little puppies and cuddle up together to stay warm. When she feels a soft blanket and it's dark she goes into "nesting mode" and it's not very bird like - and not to mention adorable.

Danny's first time seeing a full mirror. She liked herself!

I took her outside for the first time today. She liked it but got really excited when the humming birds would fly by.

Galaxy S5 Sample Photography RAW

Image
These are some test shots from my Samsung Galaxy S5 that I took at a trip to Home Depot. They are all un-edited, cropped, or altered in anyway. This is exactly as they came from the phone. They were taken with  Auto-Settings, Full Resolution, and HDR enabled.
It's hard to imagine where cell-phone cameras are going to be in a couple years let alone a few years. They are already dangerously close to DSLR fully dedicated camera's who's Lenses can cost as much as a full superphone that you can carry around in your pocket and do everything else with. The need of a dedicated "point and shoot' is almost null. It's either cell-phone or the full on DSLR and for most cases they photos end up being nearly indistinguishable.
I have a Canon 20D from a few years ago and it only has like 8mp I think. The S5 has 16mp. I also have a Canon T5i and it has 18mp. I'll have to try taking pictures from the various cameras of the exact same thing.
One of the reasons I upgrade…
