Squeeze to remember

Image

"Memory can be improved simply by clenching the fists, a study suggests. Clenching the right hand for 90 seconds helps in memory formation, while the same movement in the left improves memory recall, say US psychologists. In an experiment, 50 adults performed better at remembering words from a long list when they carried out these movements."
This is interesting because I had just read an article by Nikola Tesla where he mentioned that he would clench his feet 100 times a day. He claimed it helps with his mind. Guess he was right. This seems like an easy way to exercise your mind and body, and apparently even your memory. It sounds like it has something to do with the brains ability to create new neurons/ brain cells with physical exertion. It was once though that our brains couldn't generate new neurons and as we aged and lost them, we couldn't get them back. Recently they figured out that we actually can make new ones and t…

Da Vinci's Demons: Episode 3 -The Prisoner

Da Vinci's Demons: Episode Three - The Prisoner
Staring: Tom Riley, Laura Haddock, Elliot Cowan, Lara Pulver, Black Ritson
This episode opens with an unknown prisoner playing a board game with a player from the Vatican. The rest of the show focuses on a covenant supposedly being possessed by demonic spirits. Leonardo gets involved and attempts to figure out what has really infected them, solving the mystery, and inadvertently being infected himself. Lorenzo is also still in the midst of trying to figure out who the spy reporting back to the Vatican is. Unknowing to him that it is his mistress.

"I've yet to touch the board, but yet I've begun. The First principle. Is to take the corners. The strategy is obvious.  The corners are easier to defend. But even as we engage in localized conflicts it's important to keep the broader landscape in mind.
The game can only be won by pursuing seemingly opposing objectives simultaneously.
An opponent who can control the flow of t…

Previous Last Suppers

Andrea del Casta 1445 - 1450
Ghirlandaio Avondmaal 1480
Leonardo da Vinci 1495-1498
These two paintings of "the Last Supper" pre-date Leonardo's and obviously had a huge influence on his own interpretation. The arches in the Ghirlandaio, and the ceiling in the Casta. This gives some context to why da Vinci's was considered so revolutionary and how much better of a painter he was.

Big Foot Foot Found? Bear Foot!

Image
Two kids found remnants of a foot in Massachusetts that looks eerily human - but isn't. It hasn't been identified yet but some are thinking that it's a big foot's foot. While that would be ironic, and pretty awesome, it's more than likely a bear's foot.

Interestingly Leonardo sketched a foot that people believed to be imaginary or of a 'monster' - that was until later when we realized that the sketches were actually of a bear's foot. Their rear paws are so remarkably similar that a lot of times when fragments of a bear's skeleton are found - they are mistaken for human! This similar structure was noticed by da Vinci and he actually drew a bear and woman in the same sketch - with the woman's hand being a bear's paw.

Da Vinci's Demons: Episode 2: The Serpent

Da Vinci's Demons: Episode 2: The Serpent

This episode was about Leonardo showing Lorenzo Medici his Cannon, which failed, and then by the end proving it did work, and thus proving his allegiance to the Medici family. It's called "The Serpent" because he is trying to find the "Tree of knowledge" through the "book of leaves" and this is shown by a play about the Garden of Eden. It also alludes to Lorenzo's mistress being a spy for the Vatican.

“In rivers, the water that you touch is the last of what has passed and the first of that which comes; so with present time.” Real Leonardo da Vinci

"The river is circular. One man's death paves the way for another. Men like ourselves can change the river's course. There is no yesterday you see. Time is one single continuum. See as I have seen into infinity and you will be a god, but know this, you will suffer" - The Turk & in Leo's dream.

Happy Birthday Lionardo da Vinci~!

“1452. There was born to me a grandson, the son of Ser Piero my son, on the 15th day of April, a Saturday, at the 3rd hour (10.30pm) of the night. He bears the name Lionardo.”
—Happy 561st birthday Lionardo! This is the first record of da Vinci written by his Grandfather noting his birth.

Ugly the Cat

Image
"Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the resident tomcat.

Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and shall we say, love. The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly.

To start with, he had only one eye, and where the other should have been was a gaping hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot has appeared to have been badly broken at one time, and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the corner. His tail has long since been lost, leaving only the smallest stub, which he would constantly jerk and twitch. Ugly would have been a dark gray tabby striped-type, except for the sores covering his head, neck, even his shoulders with thick, yellowing scabs.

Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction. “That’s one UGLY cat!!”

All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hos…

The Hanged Man Episode 101: Da Vinci's Demons

The Hanged Man Episode 101: Da Vinci's Demons
First Impressions:
The first episode might be some-what confusing for those not familiar with the Renaissance, especially in the context of the political and religious struggles of the time. In Italy around the 1500's there were "city states" and each was ruled by both the Catholic church and warring families. The Medici were the family in control at the time and the separation between church and state were blurred. Both were corrupt and you can see how they included that in the show.
Essentially you could buy and manipulate your way into the Church and to even become the Pope. Becoming a Cardinal was a first step. It wasn't who was the most devout but who was the most politically manipulative.  The secretive and murderous activities did happen and that is why the first episode is called: "The Hanged Man" - this is something that da Vinci was present for and even sketched, apparently from real life.
Leonar…
