John Otberg's Grandma vs. Monopoly

Image
"Now, my grandmother was a wonderful person. She taught me how to play the game Monopoly. She understood that the name of the game is to acquire. She would accumulate everything she could and eventually, she became the master of the board. And then she would always say the same thing to me. She would look at me and she would say:

“One day, you'll learn to play the game.”

One summer, I played Monopoly almost every day, all day long. And that summer, I learned to play the game. I came to understand the only way to win is to make a total commitment to acquisition. I came to understand that money and possessions- that's the way that you keep score. And by the end of that summer, I was more ruthless than my grandmother. .

I was ready to bend the rules if I had to, to win that game. And I sat down with her to play that fall. I took everything she had. I watched her give her last dollar and quit in utter defeat. And then she had one more thing to teach me. Then she said:

“No…

Art of Decay

Image
"In a decaying society, Art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, Art must show the world as changeable. And help to change it." -Ernst Fischer

“Man, became man through work, who stepped out of the animal kingdom as transformer of the natural into the artificial, who became therefore the magician, man the creator of social reality, will always stay the great magician, will always be Prometheus...” -Ernst Fischer

“To provoke dreams of terror in the slumber of prosperity has become the moral duty of literature.”
Ernst Fischer

“As machines become more and more efficient and perfect, so it will become clear that imperfection is the greatness of man.”  - Ernst Fischer

Consistency

"The other terror that scares us from self-trust is our consistency; a reverence for our past act or word because the eyes of others have no other data for computing our orbit than our past acts, and we are loath to disappoint them."

Carnovsky's RGB Filtered Art vs. Leonardo da Vinci

Image
So essentially what this kind of art does it hide or obscure certain images within each other that are only fully revealed when a certain color light is applied. This is just one of the types or artistic techniques I found that Leonardo implemented in his art. This will be explained further in my book!

"RGB’s technique consists in the overlapping of three different images, each one in a primary color. The resulting images from this three level’s superimposition are unexpected and disorienting. The colors mix up, the lines and shapes entwine becoming oneiric and not completely clear. Through a colored filter (a light or a transparent material) it is possible to see clearly the layers in which the image is composed. The filter’s colors are red, green and blue, each one of them serves to reveal one of the three layers."

Quotes by Leonardo da Vinci:

"The hue of an illuminated object is affected by that of the luminous body.

The surface of any opaque body is affected by the …

Evil thinking is either Envy or Ingratitude.

Image
A strange symbolical sketch with the accompanying quote: “Evil thinking is either Envy or Ingratitude.” - by Leonardo da Vinci

“And the mountains will seem few in number, for only those will be seen which are farthest apart from each other, since at such distances the increases in the density creates a brightness so pervading that the darkness of the hills is divided, and quite disappears towards their summits. In the small adjacent hills it cannot find such foothold, and therefore they are less disable and least of all at their bases.”- Leonardo da Vinci

5. A Roadmap of Brain Wiring

Neuroscientists like to compare the task of unraveling the brain’s connections to the frustration of untangling the cords beneath your computer desk – except that in the brain, there are hundreds of millions of cords, and at least one hundred trillion plugs. Even with our most advanced computers, some researchers were despairing of ever seeing a complete connectivity map of the human brain in our lifetimes. But thanks to a team led by Van Wedeen at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital, 2012 gave us an unexpectedly clear glimpse of our brains’ large-scale wiring patterns. As it turns out, the overall pattern isn’t so much a tangle as a fabric – an intricate, multi-layered grid of cross-hatched neural highways. What’s more, it looks like our brains share this grid pattern with many other species. We’re still a long way from decoding how most…

The Benjamin Button Jellyfish and Immortality

Image
This story is about the discovery of a certain species of Jelly Fish that is able to age in reverse - and then back again. It would be a like a frog turning back into a tadpole - and then back into a frog - indefinitely. The implications of understanding and implementing this within our own species would be pretty amazing. Somehow their cells are able to change types but in such a way that it's able to de-age. Our own stem cells have the same ability but they only seem to work in one direction. From stem cell to a specific type of cell - but not back into a stem cell. If this could be manipulated or controlled we could potentially either stop aging - or have our bodies revert back to any age we wanted. Time will tell!

Can a Jellyfish Unlock the Secret of Immortality?

"After more than 4,000 years — almost since the dawn of recorded time, when Utnapishtim told Gilgamesh that the secret to immortality lay in a coral found on the ocean floor — man finally discovered eternal li…

Latent Language

Image
This is not the first or only time something like this has happened. It makes one wonder if there is some type of latent ability within the brain to be able to understand other languages that we consciously are unable to. There are also other examples of other people who have experienced brain "damage" that enabled them to play instruments or even have an overwhelming urge to create art. It's not strange at all for someone who has a stroke or hits their head to be debilitated mentally - but for someone to have mental abilities "unlocked" is obviously a lot more mysterious.

This is different from Foreign Accent Syndrome which is when someone starts to seemingly have their accent change after a similar incident. That is from damages to the parts of the brain that control how we talk in our own language - that causes it coincidentally to sound like a "Foreign" or different accent that the speaker did originally. To be able to speak another language you di…

Leonardo da Vinci - Quotes and Sketches

Image
“I ask which is swifter - a spark going upwards and living or turing downwards in death.”

“Define to me why one who slides on the ice does not fall.”

“You know the medicines when well used restore health to the sick: they will be well used when the doctor together with his understanding of their nature shall understand also what man is, what life is, and what constitution and health are. Know these well and you will know their opposites; and when this is the case you will know well how to devise a remedy.”

“Nothing is superfluous and nothing is lacking in any species of animal or product of nature unless the defect comes from the means which produce it.”

“The potencies are four: memory and intellect appetite and concupiscence. The two first are of the reason the others of the senses. Of the five senses, seeing, hearing, smelling may be partially with-held - touch and taste, not. the sense of smell leads that of taste with it, in the dog and other greedy animals.”
